3 Easy First Piano Songs for Little Kids (No Reading Music Needed)
A child's first song on the piano doesn't need lessons, sheet music or even knowing the letters. It needs a tune they already sing, a handful of keys, and someone cheering them on.
These three songs all stay on the white keys around middle C, which is exactly where little hands start.
1. Hot Cross Buns
The easiest first song there is: only three keys (E, D and C), walking down like stairs. The middle of the song repeats the same note four times, which little ones love to bang out.
2. Mary Had a Little Lamb
Uses the same three keys, plus G for the "lit-tle lamb" jump. Because children know the words so well, they can hear when a note is wrong and fix it themselves.
3. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
The classic. It uses six keys and has a big jump at the start (from C up to G), so it's a good third song once the first two feel easy.
Tips for playing with a toddler or preschooler
- Sing first, play second. Sing the song together, then find the notes.
- One finger is fine. Proper fingering can wait; the goal is hearing the tune come out of their own hands.
- Use shapes and colors, not letters. Many kids can't read yet. In plinka plonk every key has its own shape (C is a circle, G is a star), so "find the star" works at any age.
- Stop while it's still fun. Five happy minutes beats twenty frustrated ones.
Practice with Plonk
plinka plonk is a free piano for little hands. Plonk the yeti lights up the next key, gently helps when a note is wrong, and cheers at the end. Play on an iPad or computer screen, or on a real piano: Plonk listens through the microphone or a MIDI keyboard.
